The police presence added an even more somber weight to the already heavy atmosphere in Violet's apartment. Gabe stood beside me, his eyes searching mine for answers. I took a steadying breath, bracing myself to recount the chilling events that unfolded when I arrived.

"She sounded frantic on the phone, but here she is, eating. Or was, I guess. Her seriousness on the call doesn’t match this.”

“No,” he said. “It doesn’t.”

“Nourishment is a priority, even in turbulent times,” Cooper said.

I glanced down at him and groaned. “Not now, Coop.”

“I’m serious.” He scrambled over to the table. “Look. She had it delivered. She could have easily ordered it prior to her call to you. It arrived, and as she was eating, she somehow came upon the information, and called you. Whatever happened to her happened right after that call.” He pointed his little paw at her phone lying on the floor. “Or else her phone wouldn’t be on the floor.”

I hadn’t thought of that. I reiterated his theory to Gabe.

“That’s a good point,” he said, his voice aimed down at my familiar. “But we’ll still have to talk to the food delivery service.” He surveyed the small space. “I don’t see any security or video cameras. It’s likely she had some kind of medical emergency with unfortunate timing.”

“You think she died of natural causes?”

“I think there’s no obvious evidence of a crime.”

“There wouldn’t be when someone’s poisoned,” Cooper said.

I eyed him curiously.

“Herbicide. My schnozz can sniff out the snuffer like a pro.”

My eyes widened. “You smell it in here?”

“No. It’s in her food.”

I looked up at Gabe. “Cooper says her food was poisoned with herbicide.”

He hollered to one of his magical officers and told him to get the food out of there right away. He didn’t want it somehow tainted from work at the crime scene. He placed his hand on my shoulder and squeezed. “Let me get to work here.”

“I’d like to stay.”

“Please. I’ll need you to tell an officer exactly what happened when you arrived.”

I nodded quickly as tears streamed down my cheeks. The memory of that call echoed in my mind as Violet's trembling voice permeated the space around me. The words lingered in the air, weighted with the intensity of the moment.

Cooper roamed the small apartment in search of anything to help learn the truth about Violet’s death. “Ab,” he whispered from the short hallway to Violet’s bedroom. “Over here.”

I pushed through the small crowd of growing police officers. “Did you find something?”

He dropped low to the ground and crawled under the bed. He returned with a small note tucked under his front leg. He scooted it toward me.

I crouched down and read the note without touching it. There were two names written on the paper. Max Stallion and Leonard Kistler. “Gabe!”
